MAISARA RAHMAN, MD HOME GARDENING In terms of productivity, gardening is an impressive hobby. It promotes mental health, exercise, nutrition, and a sense of accomplishment. It can be done alone or with a group, in your backyard or at a public site. You can plant vegeta- bles, herbs, flowers, or fruits and in comparison to some hobbies, it's extremely versatile. If you are currently in be- tween interests or have never really had one, I strongly suggest giving gardening a try. In the United States, one of the greatest health issues we face today is obesity. The convenience of fast food is swift- ly overshadowing nutritious meals, as well as cooking at home. We need to get back to our roots—literally. Planting a vegetable or herb garden is a great way to get excited about cooking. There is something so uplifting about cultivating and caring for a plant, than being able to reap all of the benefits. The food tastes better, the nutrients are richer, and it can improve your mood. You may feel a reduction in anxiety, a decrease in your weight and an increase in your strength and cardio. Not to mention that eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce your overall caloric intake, strength and cardio. Not to mention that eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce your overall caloric intake, which may lead to decreased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The best thing about this activity is that it doesn't have to be done alone. Start by looking for a local group in your community that gardens together. In Temecula, the Rose Haven Heritage Garden is a great place to start. They have local classes on gardening for both roses and vegetables. Ask them about starting a club for those new to gardening and get a community going! I promise you will feel an improvement in all aspects of your health. View Dr. Rahman's online profile HERE 12
