ANNA MILLER, DO SERVICE Service itself can mean many different things to many people. To me, it was a selfless opportunity to represent and defend the country I love. It meant sacrificed time with my loved ones in order to con- tribute to something greater than myself. I always felt compelled to give back and serve my country and as a result, the military enriched my life in so many ways. I had the honor of serving my country for over 15 years and it was always a privilege. Serving others may be a sacrifice at times, but if done in an altruistic mindset, it can be beneficial for your mental as well as physical health. Volunteering your time has been shown to increase ones social connections, thus decreasing the chances of depression. 1 Additionally, giving of one's time on a fre- quent basis can often mean movement and movement means exercise! A study completed by Carnegie Mellon University, "shows that older adults who volunteer for at least 200 hours per year decrease their risk of hypertension, or high blood pressure, by 40 percent". 2 40 percent is a pretty significant number! By serving others you have the opportunity to not only invest in others well-being, but your own as By serving others you have the opportunity to not only invest in others well-being, but your own as well. The Navy's core values are: Honor, Courage and Commitment – words I live by. 3 I believe having positive core philosophies can enrich your life and benefit those for whom you sacrifice your time. Subsequently in my life, I continually strive to be honorable, courageous, and committed to my family as well as my patients. View Dr. Miller's online profile HERE 13
