WheelsOfGrace.com | Volume 10 Issue 5 | 7 1 O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. 2 Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am faint; O Lord, heal me, for my bones are in agony. 3 My soul is in anguish. How long, O Lord, how long? 4 Turn, O Lord, and deliver me; save me because of your unfailing love. 9 The Lord has heard my cry for mercy; the Lord accepts my prayer. 10 All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed; they will turn back in sudden disgrace. The usual crew was sitting around the proverbial "pickle barrel" at the local motorcycle dealership, exchanging horror stories from the road. "She turned right in front of me - RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME! I didn't have a chance." Another interrupts, "It's a good thing that I slowed down before going through that intersection. I mean, the light was green, but something told me to slow down. Sure as I did, here comes this kid in one of those lowered Japanese racers... and on a cell phone no less. I was clearly in the right, but I could have been creamed!" Sid tells of the injustice of being cited for excessively loud pipes by an overly zealous rookie cop. "I do the speed limit and I obey all the laws. I even wear a DOT approved helmet, but on the wrong day in the wrong upscale neighborhood I get a ticket for what the police say were 'excessively loud pipes!' How did he know how loud they were? He didn't have a decibel meter!" And the stories continued throughout the morning about how mistreated we all were and how unjust the world was. "How long, O Lord, how long?" How many times have you heard someone declare (or maybe even you yourself), "I only want what's fair." Or, "What we really need here is justice… just give me justice!" Probably Pastor Marty Edwards, Black Sheep HDFC more than a few times with today's entitlement minded society. But the writer of this Psalm has a more realistic understanding of his situation. Instead of demanding justice and seeking his rights, he cries out to the Lord to have mercy upon him. And truth be told, that's what we all really need - MERCY! Sure, I complain about the time when I was unjustly treated but how many times did I get away with running that "yellow" light or rolling that stop sign? If we received our demand for justice and truly got what was coming to us, we would all end up as grease spots on the carpet for we are all guilty of breaking every one of God's laws. But instead of giving us what's coming to us, our loving heavenly Father wisely sees through our rantings and tantrums and instead gives us his mercy. So we would be wise to shut-up and gladly receive mercy over justice. He is happy to provide it if we ask sincerely. Don't try to hide your feelings and failures from God… nothing surprises him. Be honest and rest assured that we will be heard and he will answer our cry. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.
