Kids Allergies By Victor Karydis, C.N.H.P. Being a father of two boys, I always try to stay informed on what works the best when it comes to different health challenges our kids might be facing. Through the years, I have consulted with many parents, mostly mothers, who are concerned about their kids allergies. There are usually two types: food allergies and environmental allergies. In this issue, I would like to focus on the environmental allergies. An environmental allergy is a sign that the immune system is not working properly. The immune system is reacting abnormally to substances that really shouldnt bother it. An environmental allergy is usually a reaction to pollen, mold, pollutants or chemicals. The immune system behaves like a blindfolded person who cannot discriminate between friend and enemy, so he lashes out at everyone and anyone he meets. Standard allopathic medical diagnosis is made by conducting allergen tests via the blood or the skin. Standard medical treatment usually involves suppressing the symptoms by suppressing the immune system with the ongoing use of oral antihistamines, nasal decongestants, steroidal sprays and allergy shots. All of these pharmaceutical medications directly or indirectly suppress and weaken the immune system over time, which is the exact opposite of what actually needs to be done to cure this condition. The environmental allergy tests are of limited use, as it is impossible to avoid the pollen, dander, dust and grasses that are most associated with environmental allergies. Correcting, strengthening and balancing the malfunctioning immune system through proper nutrition and supplementation is the ultimate cure and should be the objective of any medical treatment. Below is a list of supplements that I recommend during allergy season: 1.Quercetin 2. Vitamin C 3. Moducare (by Wakanaga) 4. Aller-Ease (by Buried Treasures) In addition, your child should be taking the following supplements for strengthening and regulating basic immune function: 1.Probiotics 2.Colostrum 3. Cod Liver Oil 4. Vitamin C 5. Vitamin D3 Brands and quantities vary depending on the age and weight of the child. In our home, these are the supplements that we have used for years and they have proven to be very effective. If your child were suffering from environmental allergies, the supplements above would be a great start to building their immune system without having to worry about different side effects drugs can have. Underlining food sensitivities or food allergies may contribute to your childs increased sensitivity and susceptibility to environmental allergies.
