According to The American Ins tute of Stress, stress is defined as physical, mental, or emo onal strain or tension. Stress can either originate externally or internally, and most mes even both. Yet the vast majority of the me it works as a sequen al pa ern. This means that externally you experience a rough patch in your life and gradually the stress becomes so powerful it takes a toll on your body. This then creates internal stress which poten ally results in chronic diseases or disorders. You may wonder what I mean by internal stress. Internal stress is how your body reacts to the stress you put in it. For example, you just lost your job and you have to pay for your child's tui on, resul ng in that week ge ng really sick with a high fever. The internal stress is your body ge ng sick with a high fever the same week you lost your job, meaning that because of the stress your immune system is currently now depleted. It has been shown through many studies that stress not only works along with your body physically, yet psychologically as well. An example is going to war and being stressed by having to constantly be aware of your surroundings for survival, then resul ng in an anxiety disorder (post-trauma c stress disorder) that may even s ck to you for the rest of your life. This example goes hand in hand with our body's acute stress response known as the fight-or-flight response, meaning you will either stay and fight the problem or run away to safety. Anxiety is caused from nervousness, worry, and fear, in which all are characteris cs of stress. It can cause the body's sympathe c nervous system to release stress hormones (cor sol) crea ng symptoms of headaches or even depression. Depression may most mes be the end result a er a long period of stress, crea ng thoughts of giving up on the world. Physically depression causes fa gue, constricts blood vessels, and weakens your immune system. Inflamma on has been closely related to stress, coming from a weak immune system, a rac ng diseases and illnesses.
