Abby's Magazine - Volume 6 Issue 5 | Page 15 There have been volumes wri en in the last several years about the adverse health effects of our "too sterile" society in the U.S. For many, it is so counterintui ve to our sensibili es that we simply can't imagine how we can be too clean, or have too much good hygiene. However, the science says otherwise and it's worth our me to understand what experts are saying. Research suggests in fact, that there is a connec on between all of the "an bacterial" soaps, sprays, wipes and the host of disinfec ng cleaning products that we use daily... and the rising rates of allergies, autoimmune problems and gut related disorders that are now commonplace. So these experts go on to conclude that widespread overuse of these an bacterial and disinfec ng agents is preven ng proper forma on of a healthy gut bacteria and restoring the beneficial bacteria could be the answer to many of the aforemen oned maladies. Throughout the 20th century un l now, epidemiologists no ced a sharp up ck in rates of a variety of chronic inflammatory disorders such as allergies and auto immuni es in developed countries, meaning throughout Western Europe, North America and Australia. A li le more than a genera on ago, we lived in a more rural environment. We also walked, rode bikes and played outside (kids and adults) a lot more than we do today. I've heard my en re life how people raised on farms and ranches, generally enjoyed be er health. The missing ingredient... is the dirt! Soil Based Organisms (SBOs) have stronger strains of beneficial bacteria that can survive through the diges ve system and provide the most benefit. The "farm effect" is a well-documented study that found farm popula ons across North America and Europe had a 50% reduc on in allergic occurrences in farm children. Fermented foods and probio c supplements can also be very beneficial and are a great start. However, the first step should be the realiza on that many of the things that we do (and don't do) habitually should change. Backing off on cleaning agents, par cularly the ones that aren't "clean" to begin with. Ge ng outside and ge ng dirty... real dirty (ha-ha!) will have more health benefits than men oned here. At Abby's Farm our volunteers (and their kids) get real dirty. In fact, I'm pre y sure the kids have "play" clothes... and then there are "farm" clothes! We love it that way and promote all of the health benefits of being on our lovely farm. If you are interested to include our farm in your weekly health regiment, you can visit our website or Facebook page below and send me a note. We are changing our community (and their health) one family at a me and would love to see you out there. "Getting under your skin"?... We Hope So!
